Nylon is a signature material for Prada. For around forty years, the Italian fashion house has been processing the textile fiber into accessories and clothing that have now achieved cult status.
When Miuccia Prada joined the family business in the late 1970s, she was bored with the classic leather goods the house produced. So she started using nylon – a material that was originally designed to replace silk and was not exactly considered high-quality at the time.
A nylon backpack she created in 1984 was an instant success. This was followed by bags and finally clothing made of nylon, which still contribute to the unmistakable style of the fashion house today.
For almost two years, Prada has been using nylon, which is made from recycled plastic waste and surplus textile fibers and which can be endlessly recycled.
By the end of 2021, the Italian fashion house will have replaced all nylon with re-nylon and will be an important step further in its efforts to become the most sustainable fashion company possible.
